Returning Your Actuators to Peak Condition

Extending the Life of Your Actuators
Applying its unmatched engineering and test technology expertise, MTS offers a complete family of highly reliable, durable and energy-efficient hydraulic actuators. These workhorses are designed to meet the requirements of testing in a wide range of industries.

Actuators are continually subjected to the wear and tear from hundreds of millions of test cycles. They are subjected to more wear than any other test system component. Despite their high quality design and construction, MTS test system actuators will inevitably show decreased performance after exposure to use and abuse in the service of their job.

When an actuator is no longer able to perform as it should, it jeopardizes the integrity and fidelity of your tests, and increases the potential risks to workplace safety and the environment. A planned approach to managing the actuator lifecycle integrates well into environmental, health and safety programs, otherwise known as EHS. MTS is actively creating processes to manage waste, comply with environmental regulations, and reduce our carbon footprint.

Whether it’s an actuator for a standard configuration load frame or a corner for a road simulator, you need your equipment to be in top operating performance to deliver test results you can be confident in.

Weighing Your Options
The most basic alternatives are to either repair or replace a worn actuator. Repair involves replacing specific components within the actuator that are the cause of decreased performance. The actuator is disassembled, inspected, and worn parts are replaced or rebuilt. Repairing an actuator is often the least expensive option as only the few worn out parts are replaced. Optionally, you can replace an actuator with a new one. This ensures that you receive top-performing equipment, but is also the most expensive alternative.

The third alternative is MTS remanufacture. All parts that are subjected to wear are resurfaced or replaced. In this process, your actuator is updated to meet the newest design standards, including any improvements that have been implemented after your unit was built. All clearances are inspected, and the unit is pressure checked and performance tested. The final price for remanufacture is typically between the cost for repair and a new actuator. Remanufacture includes the basic cylinder assembly – other hydraulic components (servovalves, LVDTs, manifolds, accumulators and swivels) may be repaired or replaced at additional cost.

Avoiding Hidden Costs
The hidden cost in actuator service is downtime. To choose actuator repair is to choose to wait for its failure, resulting in a test system sitting idle waiting for the repair to be complete. And the process of approving and cutting a purchase order can add days or weeks to test system downtime.

MTS has an onsite exchange program for some configurations of Series 329 System Actuators. Under this program the actuators are exchanged systematically according to a schedule. This helps to ensure that none of the actuators experiences excessive wear that causes downtime.

Some popular models of MTS actuators can be remanufactured at MTS factory locations and returned in 10 business days from receipt of the actuator. Models eligible in standard stroke lengths of 150mm (6”) and 250mm (10”) are 244.11, 244.12, 244.21 and 244.22.
You can also save time you might lose to the bureaucracy of getting a purchase order cut. A standard MTS service contract like an Assured Maintenance Plan and the Value Payment Plan can be used to pay for all actuator service, as well as a host of other services.
